Course Information
Description	Intensive study of and practice in the strategies and techniques for developing research-based expository and persuasive texts. Emphasis on effective and ethical rhetorical inquiry, including primary and secondary research methods; critical reading of verbal, visual, and multimedia texts; systematic evaluation, synthesis, and documentation of information sources; and critical thinking about evidence and conclusions. Prerequisites	PASSED English 1301. Basic skills competency in reading and writing required.
Learning Outcomes	Course Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative writing processes.(PSLO 1)measured by essay rubric. 2. Develop ideas and synthesize primary and secondary sources within focused acedemic arguments, including one or more research-based essays.(PSLO 1 & 4)measured by class discussion/team work and essay rubric. 3. Analyze, interpret, and evaluate a variety of texts for the ethical and logical uses of evidence.(PSLO 1&2)measured by essay rubric. 4. Write in a style that clearly communicates meaning, builds credibility, and inspires belief or action.(PSLO 1,2,6, Alpha)measured by class discussion discussion & essay rubric, Pre-test/Post-test. 5. PSLO 6: Personal Responsibility Skills - Integrates choices, actions and consequences in ethical decision-making. Recognizes ethical issues when presented in a complex, multilayered (gray) context; recognizes cross- relationships among the issues; discusses in detail/ analyzes core beliefs; the discussion has greater depth and clarity showing the independent application of ethical perspectives/ concepts to an ethical question accurately; and is able to consider full implications of the application.
Textbooks	Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. No book needed, all texts are online with links in our class Blackboard weekly folders. DO, however, need access to a computer that has Word! All submissions will be MLA formatted so Word doc is a necessity.

I hope you, for the most part, enjoy the texts and learning how to discuss/write about them too. Please remember: NO LATE WORK. NO MAKE-UP WORK. Assignments will be submitted through Safe Assign, a plagiarism checker and then again in other plagiarism scanners if there is the need. The first plagiarized paper is given a 0 with NO make-up assignment given. The second plagiarized piece will result in an F for the class. FINAL MUST BE TAKEN TO PASS CLASS. ALL WRITING SUBMITTED MUST BE WRITTEN BY THE STUDENT (him or herself) ENROLLED IN THE CLASS WITH NO OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE. Plagiarism: A grade of 0 for first time (whatever the assignment is) F for the entire course if it happens again. Ignorance is NOT a defense. Plagiarism is a serious offense and will be dealt with as such. I will bend over backwards to help you but I have NO tolerance for plagiarism, which is simply stealing other's ideas. I am sure you can think on your own and your insights and understandings are what matters in reading these pieces.

Please understand that the "rules" are the same for everyone. I really DO care that you successfully finish and pass this class. I WANT to help you but YOU must do the work, per the instructions for each assignment. This course WILL take time and energy (read: thought!) Effort, on your part, IS required.
Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.

Other	I REALLY WANT you to succeed. However, you have to want it at least as much as I do. Stay current with the reading (there will be a lot of it), and actually put some thought into what you write. This is the last composition class you will have so hone your writing during this semester and let me help you become a stronger and better writer. PLEASE let me know if you are struggling (BEFORE it is too late in the semester to salvage a passing grade). Your success in this class is very important to me! I WILL respond you your emails almost immediately, so do not hesitate to contact me during this face-paced summer semester :-)
